Time:8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Type:Appointment  (Public)

Advanced Master Gardener Program:
Tree Care in the Urban Environment

A new Advanced MG class will begin on September 24th that will include additional sessions on October 8th and November 12th at the Cooperative Extension Office on Cook Avenue. Each day will include a half-day indoors and another half outdoors or on a field trip.
The Advanced MG program is open to any Master Gardener who has been an Active MG for a minimum of two years after the Provisional membership year and has at least 100 hours of volunteer service. In addition, an Advanced MG program requires that the MG, working with an ACES Advisor (Ken Creel), develop of a study outline prior to beginning the program.
The total cost for all three days will be $75 and will include a boxed lunch each day. In order to complete the program a 20-hour volunteer commitment in the area of tree related projects will be required. These hours may be part of your annual 25 hours and may be in your own community, helping your city arborist, a school tree project, or an HBG project just to name a few examples. If you can’t come up with a volunteer plan, Ken Creel can help you develop one during the course.
The course will cover everything from tree biology, common pest identification, installati on, pruning, construction issues and protection. The instructors will include tree experts from Huntsville, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa as well as local Extension folks. The program will be coordinated between the three locations mentioned above with speakers being either live locally or live via video. In the mornings we will be interacting with the other MGs at the remote sites. However, all the afternoon activities will be conducted independently on a local level.
In order to offer this course, a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 participants are needed. If you are interested in participating, please contact Ken Creel (256-523-1578 or 256-382-1554 or email: kcreel@aces.edu) for additional information and
