DOHA (AFP) — US actor Robert De Niro signed an agreement in Qatar on Sunday to launch a Doha international film festival linked to the Tribeca festival he founded in New York after the 9/11 terror attacks.
The first Tribeca Film Festival Doha, featuring 40 films, is to run from November 10-14, 2009 at the Museum of Islamic Arts which was opened on Saturday before a VIP audience of regional leaders and international celebrities.
The agreement was signed by De Niro and Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani, president of Qatar's museums authority and a daughter of the emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.
De Niro is a co-founder of the Tribeca festival aimed at revitalising cultural life in the Manhattan district of New York after the heavy loss of life with the collapse of the Twin Towers. |
