Archabbey Library exhibit features art of Michael Aakhus

The Archabbey Library Gallery, St. Meinrad, IN, is presenting an exhibit of photographs and paintings by Michael Aakhus depicting the Mexican celebration of El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), from October 29 through November 30.

Since 1977, Aakhus has been a professor of printmaking and painting at the University of Southern Indiana, where he currently serves as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts. A native of Minnesota, he attended Bemidji State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in art.

On completion of his undergraduate work, he moved to Illinois, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking, painting and drawing from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He received a grant to continue his work and moved to New Mexico to spend a year painting and making prints with the Roswell Artist in Residence Program.

His work has been exhibited widely and is represented in many public and private collections throughout the world. His current work is based on images from travels in Latin America and touches on themes related to the indigenous cultures. This exhibition for the Day of the Dead is based on a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2005 for the observation of this holiday.
